Earth Day is the largest environmental event on the planet, the only moment where all citizens of the world come together to celebrate the Earth and promote its protection. Earth Day, a moment strongly supported by US Senator Gaylord Nelson and promoted even earlier by President John Fitzgerald Kennedy, involves up to a billion people every year in 192 countries around the world. The United Nations celebrates Earth Day every year, one month and two days after the vernal equinox, on April 22. Born on April 22, 1970 to underline the need for the conservation of the Earth’s natural resources.

The idea of creating an “Earth Day” was discussed for the first time in 1962. In those years protests against the Vietnam War were increasing, and Senator Nelson came up with the idea of organizing a “teach- in” on environmental issues. Nelson also managed to involve well-known exponents of the political world such as Robert Kennedy, who in 1963 traveled through 11 states of the country holding a series of conferences dedicated to environmental issues. «All people, regardless of ethnicity, gender, income or geographical origin, have the right to a healthy, balanced and sustainable environment».

On April 22, 1970, inspired by this principle, 20 million American citizens mobilized for a demonstration to defend the Earth. Groups that had individually fought against fossil fuel pollution, factory and power plant pollution, toxic waste, pesticides, progressive desertification, and the extinction of wildlife suddenly realized that they shared common values. Among the protagonists of the event were also some big names in American entertainment including Pete Seeger, Paul Newman and Ali McGraw. Earth Day provided a major boost to environmental initiatives around the world and helped pave the way for the 1992 United Nations Summit in Rio de Janeiro.

In 2000, thanks to the spread of the internet, the founding spirit of Earth Day and the celebration of the event in general were promoted globally. The resulting event managed to involve over 5,000 environmental groups outside the United States, reaching hundreds of millions of people, and many well-known showbusiness people.
